![]() ![]() They would intimidate anybody who came near them. ![]() When we crossed the bridge over the bear river and then run down the river bed to that fun trail (I mentioned earlier), we came across a bunch of assholes dressed like pirates who were living down by the river. One year we did our usual ride down Haul Rd. Some side notes about that area and the back hill strange ranger folk who live out there: It's been a few years since I've been on this ride. Unfortunately I can't really explain that part of it because I've only done it a couple of times and don't really know it. Now we ride to another buddies house in Alta and do some trails from there that eventually gets to Lowell. That eventually gets you to hwy 20 and the Burlington Trail System. There are some really fun trails that parallel the Lowell Hill Rd, mostly powerline trails. From there it would take you to Lowell Hill Rd. Anyhow, you could ride on the river a bit and take a really cool single track up back up to where the canal is. It was a great spot to take the dogs down and play on the beach. Like you said, there is now a gate there by PGE which connects to Chicago Park Power House Road (look at a google map, you'll see where I'm talking about). We use to cross Magra bridge exit (our cabin is in that area), ride the frontage road down Haul Rd. There are some strange rangers out there in the forest! Yep, we are talking about the same area. I guess you could access Lowell Hill through Dutch Flat, up to 20, then mess around up there, then come down 20 to 174? Maybe there is a way through Red Dog or something like that to avoid 20 and 174. I have not been back down on that side for 10 years at least. Beats me if Nevada County ever took it down. Chalk Bluff Road on the other side leads down to the same spot, but some local installed a BLM gate across the road - illegally. There was a bridge across it at one time but it is gone. There is a narrow gulch carved out of rock by Steeple Hollow Creek - it drops maybe 30 feet. Out of Dutch Flat I went to Lowell Hill Road and went down to the Steeple Hollow creek crossing. Now PGE has blocked off that entire area. One time I drove down Chicago Powerhouse Road and rode around in the Bear River creekbed - supposedly you could ride across and up Chalk Bluff Road all the way to 20. ![]() Won’t be returning.Would love to hear about your route from Colfax. Yes, the river is beautiful but I can think of multiple places where it’s just as beautiful and so are the accommodations. Every day between 4-6 pm you lose water completely because they can’t handle the capacity of people they let in. The number one complaint I have is that they are so worried about making a buck that they sell unlimited amount of day passes to so many outsiders that the people who have overpaid To stay there can’t enjoy the amenities (River/showers) during the stay. The rv site has zero trees so it’s hot, the bathrooms near the Rv sites have zero ventilation except one window that shows any passerby a full View of you showering.if you’re lucky enough to get a shower while they still have water. The a/c coils hadn’t been cleaned in so long the a/c wasn’t working. They’re zip tied in pieces where they didn’t quite span the distance. There are hog panels as barriers used up stairs in the loft to keep kids from falling out. They haven’t Renovated anything I would guess since the early 90’s If that. We took a camper and our family stayed in a cabin. If you’ve seen the pics, you know the river and the bluff is beautiful, but that is all this place has going for them.
